We are at Amherst!

We went for our visit to Amherst today. We were able to see many of the programs in action. It was a great time! The students are pumped for Grade 9.

Welcome Back

Well last week was certainly interesting. Here's hoping the weather is better this week.

January 14 ( Tues.) is Shadow Day at Amherst. We will be walking to the high school around 9:30. The students will move around the school in a group checking out all there's to know about Grade 9 life. Students will be eating lunch in the cafeteria that day. Please be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

In literacy we have started literature circles. All the students have selected the book they'd like to read and have formed their groups.

Ratio and Rate is the topic we will be covering in Math for the next couple of weeks. We will also take a look at many real-life math topics such as dicounts (my favourite), sales tax (not really my favourite), commission and interest.

We will be finishing our cell unit in January and continuing with Geography. Another topic we will cover this week is Healthy Food Choices. This is a great topic to start conversations at home.

Don't forget that Friday January 17th is a PA Day.

Break Time!

I'd like to wish all the families of 8R a safe and happy holiday. Today is Miss Ashat's last day and she will be missed. The students have had a busy week but all the hard work was worth it. The 3D models of plant and animal cells were a huge success and the Grade 8's really enjoyed building them. We will also wrap up our study of the Outsiders today. To incorporate a media representation we will watch the 1980's version of The Outsiders movie.
Congrats to this month's student of the month winners; James, Devin and Stephan for Tolerance.
See you next year !

Pics from this week

December

8R would like to welcome Miss Ashat to our classroom. She will be with us until the break. She brings with her great knowledge in the area of biology and is currently teaching the students our Cells unit.

Our Shopping Spree was a great success. However we couldn't have done it without our wonderful volunteers. All the Grade 8 students really did a wonderful job helping to run this event.

We continue to take a look at fractions in Math. We are not only learning how to calculate using fractions but trying to answer why the calculation rules are the way they are.

We have finished reading The Outsiders and are currently learning the particulars of an essay.

The break is fast approaching but we will be working hard until the last bell.
